The custom of drinking tea was first introduced in Japan in the 9th century by a Buddhist monk who had returned to his home country after spending time in China. The monk brought with him tea seeds as well as methods of tea preparation he learned during his travels. Over the centuries tea became more and more of an integral part of Japanese culture and by the 16th century tea drinking had expanded to all levels of society. The principles of harmony, purity, respect and tranquility are central to Japanese tea ceremony. The ceremony can be in any space that the host wishes, indoors or outdoors. The serving of a small traditional Japanese sweet marks the beginning of the ceremony. Afterwards, each utensil including the tea bowl, whisk and tea scoop are cleaned and placed in an exact order and the powdered green tea, matcha, is prepared and served individually by the host. The guests drink the tea and partake in a ritual discussion. The discussion usually consists of the quality of the tea, beauty of the flower arrangement, details of the thematic art displayed on the walls as well as the handcrafted utensils and tea bowls. We are pleased to invite you to an exhibition of Accoutrements of the Tea Ceremony In collaboration with the exhibition a traditional Japanese tea ceremony will be held on Thursday March 26th, 2009 at 1:00, 2:30 and 4:00 p.m. at the Koichi Yanagi Oriental Fine Arts. Please stop by our UES store between March 4th and 14th to make a reservation. The invitation will be given on a first come, first served basis, as seating is limited.
