The Art of Furoshiki
The tradition of furoshiki dates far back in Japanese culture. Furoshiki eventually became popular as a multi-purpose item; however, it was originally intended for use as a spread in the public baths. Functional and eco-friendly, modern furoshiki can be used as a grocery bag, tote, gift-wrap, tablecloth, scarf, as well as blanket. The cloths can be made of a variety of fabrics and can be developed in a range of sizes. We at 45rpm have constructed one-of-a-kind furoshiki made from recycled 45rpm original textiles as well as searched to find rare vintage furoshiki dating from 100 to 150 years ago. All of the cloths were either dyed by hand with Aizome, natural plant indigo, or vegetable dyes. Also, the original patchwork and sashiko, hand stitching, is a testament to the craftsmanship. The furoshiki will be on display and for sale at both of our NYC locations from January 28th to February 7th. The vintage furoshiki will be on sale exclusively at our Upper East Side location. Please stop by and explore the art of furoshiki at 45rpm.
